Japanese architect Kurokawa dies at 73 October 12, 2007 TOKYO, Oct 12, 2007 (Xinhua via COMTEX) -- Renowned Japanese architect Kisho Kurokawa died Friday of heart failure at the age of 73 at a Tokyo hospital, Kyodo News said. Kurokawa left architectural works in some 20 countries around the world during his career of over four decades. Among the most famous works were Kuala Lumpur International Airport in Malaysia, the New Wing of the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam and the National Art Center in Tokyo. Kurokawa was also the designer for the Chinese-Japanese Youth Center in Beijing. Besides, he was also active in urban planning in several Chinese cities including Shenzhen, Guangzhou of the Guangdong Province and Zhengzhou, Henan Province. Born in Nagoya in 1934, Kurokawa studied architecture at the University of Tokyo graduate school under the late Kenzo Tange. He won various international awards including the Gold Medal from the Academy of Architecture of France and the Chicago Athenaeum Museum International Architecture Award. Kurokawa intended to enter politics in recent years. He filed candidacy for the Tokyo gubernatorial election and the upper house lawmaker election earlier this year though failed in both.
