Japanese architect Sanaa has unveiled its design for this year’s summer pavilion at the Serpentine Gallery.
The temporary pavilion, to be built on the gallery’s lawn in London’s Hyde Park, and open from July until October, will be Sanaa’s first built project in the UK.
Its transparent open structure features a metal roof which wraps around the trees surrounding the site.
Project architects Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa, said the pavilion was designed to appear like “floating aluminium, drifting freely between the trees like smoke”.
They added: “The reflective canopy undulates across the site, expanding the park and sky. Its appearance changes according to the weather, allowing it to melt into the surroundings.
“It works as a field of activity with no walls, allowing views to extend uninterrupted across the park and encouraging access from all sides. It is a sheltered extension of the park where people can read, relax and enjoy lovely summer days.”
The pavilion is the ninth to be commissioned by the gallery. Previous pavilions have been designed by Frank Gehry, Zaha Hadid, Daniel Libeskind and Sejima and Nishizawa’s tutor Toyo Ito.
The project has no budget and is funded through sponsorship arrangements, this year led by Netjets, and the sale of the finished structure.
