The Queen has presented Portuguese architect Álvaro Siza with the RIBA Royal Gold Medal – the profession’s highest accolade in the UK
The award was announced last October and the medal presented to 75-year old Siza at Buckingham Palace today (26 February). Siza gave a lecture at the RIBA last night and a dinner will be held tonight.
Already a Pritzker Prize winner, Siza designed the Serpentine Gallery’s 2005 summer pavilion in London with long-time collaborator Eduardo Souta de Moura but has yet to build a permanent structure in the UK.
His most famous buildings include the Leça Swimming Pools complex (1966), and Santa Maria Church (1996), both in Siza’s native Portugal.
Siza is the subject of a special tribute in this week’s Architects’ Journal, including an analysis of his work introduced by AJ editor Kieran Long.
It was only the fourth time the Queen has presented the award. On this occasion, it was to mark the RIBA’s 175th anniversary.
