Herzog & de Meuron Tenerife Arts Space officially opens
5 November, 2008By David CohnHerzog & de Meuron's Tenerife Arts Space (TEA) has been inaugurated in Santa Cruz de Tenerife in the Canary Islands.
The cultural complex combines an institute of contemporary art named after local artist Óscar Domínguez, a photography centre and a public library. Sponsored by the island's regional government, the 21,000sq m facility has been in development since 1999. The building is located along a steep ravine, the Barranco de Santos, which borders the western edge of the historic core. The architect has created a public pedestrian path that descends diagonally through the building from the top of the site to the banks of the Barranco. The route widens at midpoint to form a triangular-shaped entry plaza. Partially covered, this plaza is animated by the terrace of the restaurant and café, and overlooks the diaphanous space of the library's main reading room through continuous glass walls.

The building’s upper level houses skylit galleries for the institute's permanent collection, while the lower level contains temporary exhibition spaces and the photography galleries. The two floors are connected to the entry lobby by a sweeping spiral stair. An elongated triangular geometry of folded planes extends throughout the building, including a number of patios scattered among interior spaces. Exteriors are finished in grey concrete, pierced by small bubble-like glass-filled openings in random patterns.

Herzog & de Meuron described the centre as “not only a place of encounter for people, but also a place of intersection for the landscape of the contemporary city, the old city ... and the archaic topography of the Barranco." The building features two permanent art installations, a wall mural by local artist Juan Gopar in the entry plaza, and photographs by Thomas Ruff in the library. The local associate architect was Virgilio Gutiérrez Herreros. It is Herzog & de Meuron’s second arts centre inaugurated in Spain this year, following the opening of the Caixa Forum in Madrid last February. Also in Santa Cruz, the practice remodelled the Plaza of Spain last year, and is currently transforming the city's port for recreational uses.
