MVRDV and Adept win contest for Copenhagen tower

The winning design is inspired by the shape of the black and gold spire of one of the city’s most famous churches, Our Saviour, which has offered views across the skyline since the 1700s.

With a total floor area of 21,688sq m, the scheme includes flats, retail units, offices, a hotel and a public plaza.

The architects describe the development a series of, with sky gardens terraced along the south of the building, as a “vertical village”.

A flexible grid of 60sq m blocks are arranged around three central cores, which the architects say will allow the scheme to be altered by redesignating units.

At the base of the building, its footprint narrows to create public space, while further up, the structure leans northwards to increase the surface area on its south side.

The tower will be sited in the east of Copenhagen, in the independent municipality Rødovre. A local park will be refurbished as part of the development, including the addition of a new playground.

The win further establishes MVRDV’s presence in the Danish capital. The firm recently completed its Frøsilos project on Copenhagen’s waterfront, which saw old silos refurbished to create a residential scheme.
