3P Urban Process to refurbish Spanish cultural centre

21 August, 2008

London-based architect 3P Urban Process has beaten 52 firms in a competition to refurbish a cultural centre for the residents of Pontevedra in north-west Spain.

The firm, founded in 2004 by three Spanish architects, aims to give the existing 1950s single-storey cultural centre a contemporary image while vastly increasing its size, from 225sq m to 1,050sq m, by adding three floors and a basement.

An external wall, comprised of battens of varying densities, made from locally grown pine, is designed to maximise daylight and natural ventilation.

Timber will also be used for the stairs while internal walls and partitions will be plastered white to achieve a clean finish.

The competition was run by the RIBA’s Spanish counterpart, COAG, on behalf of Pontevedra Council.

The project, worth £635,000, is scheduled to start on site at the beginning of next year and open in early 2010.
